Course Credits for Australian Residents

Credit Transfer (CT)

Credit Transfer is recognising the equivalence in content and learning outcomes between different types of learning and/or qualifications previously undertaken and completed successfully.

Skills Australia Institute complies with the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015 Clause 3.5 Accept and provide credit to learners.

Skills Australia Institute will recognise and accept Certificates and Statements of Attainment issued by another Registered Training Organisation (RTO) or any other authorised issuing organisation.

For any units of competency successfully completed, that are equivalent to any units that form part of the qualification the student is enrolled for, a Credit Transfer will be granted.

For any units of competency that are not equivalent, students may need to undertake further training or apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

To apply for Credit Transfer (CT), students will need to complete Application for Recognition Form and provide copies of their Certificates and/or Statements of Attainment or access to view their Academic Records via the USI Transcript online. The Application for Recognition Form is available from Student Administration.

Please note: Skills Australia Institute is required to contact the issuing organisation to verify the validity of your parchments.

For students who are successful in gaining Credit Transfers (CT), they may be eligible to have a reduction in their course fees. If eligible, the reduction in course fees will be credited towards the last semester payment. A notice of the result will be sent to the student’s internal email box and by mail.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that involves assessment of an individual’s relevant prior learning (including formal, informal and non-formal learning) to determine the credit outcomes of an individual application for credit.

RPL determines the advanced standing to which the student is entitled in relation to a course or qualification. The focus of RPL is what has been learned, rather than how, where or when it was learned. RPL focuses on the demonstration of competence and the currency of that competence to industry standards.

If a student has gained competencies at work or elsewhere which are relevant to the qualification in which they are participating, they may not have to undertake the study unit(s) of competency covering that content. Students seeking RPL must establish the currency of their skills or competence.

To be able to apply for RPL, students are required to provide sufficient and relevant evidence to support their application. Evidence that can be supplied but is not limited to:

  • Certificates, Statements of Attainment and/or Records of Achievement issued by other Registered Training Organisations (RTO)
  • University Transcripts with the relevant syllabus
  • Any other relevant certificates
  • Letters from your employer, work colleagues and/or clients indicating where relevant, any specific units of competency and the elements, that are undertaken as part of the students job
  • Samples of work previously completed in the workplace, social, community or in other settings where the student applies their learning, skill or competence.
  • Curriculum Vitae (CVs) or Resume (inclusive of job description and summaries of previous training and development).

Students may also be required to attend an interview to discuss their application.

There are fees associated with applying for RPL. The fee payable will vary depending on the unit/s you are seeking RPL for.

All students have the right to express a concern or problem if they feel they have been unjustly treated or have a serious complaint for all academic, disciplinary and personal matters.

All complaints and grievances will be treated seriously and investigated promptly, confidentially and impartially will in no way be of detriment to the initiator.

Students have access to Skills Australia Institute’s internal Complaint and Appeals Procedure. Please refer to Skills Australia Institute’s Complaint and Appeals Procedure which is available in the Student Handbook.

All attempts will be made by Skills Australia Institute to resolve the grievance internally with all parties involved. In the instance, however, where the grievance cannot be resolved internally, an appropriate legal or independently impartial body will be approached immediately to act as objective and impartial arbitrator.
